Active Support
Active Support involves staff training and organisational procedures to guide the way staff in residential settings support people with intellectual disability, and substantial support needs.
In the United Kingdom, research shows that the Active Support approach results in more effective staff support for resident participation in activities, and greater participation by residents, with associated improvements in resident lifestyle.
The University of Sydney's Centre for Developmental Disability Studies (CDDS) provides training in the implementation of Active Support . This training includes workshops for managers and staff, as well as in-house training for direct support staff. The CDDS staff leading the training have been tutored in Active Support by colleagues from the United Kingdom who developed the original procedures. Subsequently, CDDS staff have also undertaken the initial research-based implementation of Active Support in Australia.
A 25-minute video on Active Support, used in training sessions run by CDDS, is also available for purchase. Accompanying this video are 6 handbooks. The video and handbooks were originally prepared in the UK by the instigators of Active Support , Professor David Felce, Dr Sandy Toogood, Dr Edwin Jones, Dr Jonathan Perry and Dr Kathy Lowe.
