Focus on training

In an effort to fix Australia's chronic skills shortage the Government will create 4500 pre-vocational training places for trades and 7000 school-based apprenticeships.
The focus on training follows a pre-election promise to establish 24 Australian Technical Colleges for 7,200 year 11 and 12 students costing of $351 million.

Budget provides more apprenticeships, training

Young people interested in pursuing a traditional trade will have access to more training places and apprenticeships under measures announced in this Budget.
The major funding includes $120 million to extend the Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy to new apprentices to help ease their financial burden when they start training.

Govt to introduce vocational legislation

The government will introduce legislation into parliament on Wednesday to establish its controversial Australian Technical Colleges.
The network of 24 Australian Technical Colleges will be set up to train a maximum of 7,200 year 11 and 12 students in a variety of trades.

The unemployed, students earn more without losing out

DOLE recipients and students will be able to earn more before they start losing their benefits as part of a plan to encourage people back into the labour market.
The policy is designed to reduce the high effective marginal tax rates that people on Newstart, and a host of other allowances, face as they take on part-time work.
